We’re turning 31!

Liz Hooper

Please put Wednesday 8 September in your calendar. U3A Nunawading is about to celebrate its 31st anniversary. Our 30th anniversary last year was postponed due to COVID, so we are hoping to hold a fun event in the Hub this year for members.

We’ll provide more information closer to the date. Whatever we do, it will be in line with COVID restrictions at the time.

3-year plan

On 3 May, the Committee of Management held a workshop to begin a new 3-year Strategic and Operational Plan from 2021- 2023. Our plans continue on from our previous 3-year plan which included a wish-list for a community garden (already in progress – refer last Update); and a speakers’ forum (see article in this Update).

We will also be exploring the feasibility of adding pickle-ball and walking football to our program offerings and considering the inclusion of a petanque space and an adult playground in consultation with Whitehorse City Council. These additions aim to enhance and enrich the experience of our members. Other plans include a UMAS upgrade, SMS communication for members and continued development of our website as a primary mechanism for members to access information.

Stages a real bonus

It is wonderful to see our new stages being used for many of our exercise, dance and Zumba classes. These stages were provided by Bendigo Community Bank, Blackburn South branch, as a grant in 2020. The flexibility of these stages is a real bonus as we can use up to four stages in different spaces at the same time.

Excess equipment gifted

We are no longer holding classes at Forest Hill Computer Centre as all computer classes are currently on Zoom. All excess equipment is being distributed to other U3As and community groups in line with an agreement made when we received a 2014 state government grant to purchase the equipment. Plans are afoot to offer a few face-to-face opportunities for members to learn how to use their own devices.
